ModelSim Xilinx Edition (MXE) - Ethernet-based license does not work properly on laptops when disconnected from the network

When I install ModelSim XE on a laptop computer and select an Ethernet-based licensing scheme, the license might not work if the laptop is disconnected from the network.

This problem occurs because most networks use a DHCP server for remote access. The DHCP server dynamically assigns an IP Address to each laptop that connects to the network from a pool of IP addresses available to dial-up or remote users.

Consequently, if the license is issued to the local IP address of the laptop, the license does not work when the laptop is connected to the network because the DHCP server has assigned a new IP address to the laptop. Furthermore, because the process is dynamic, there is no way to ensure that the same IP address is assigned the next time you log on to the network.

GLOBEtrotter (manufacturer of the FLEXlm license) recommends a specific flow to work around this problem. This work-around requires the installation of a NWLink IPX/SPX Network Protocol. Use one of the following applicable procedures to install this protocol.

Windows 2000

1. Start -> Settings -> Network and Dial-up Connections.

2. Double-click "Local Area Connection".

3. Click "Install" on the Local Area Properties pop-up menu.

4. Select "Protocol".

5. Click "Add".

6. Select "NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport," and click "OK."

Windows NT

1. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.

2. Double-click "Network".

3. Select the Protocols Tab.

4. Select the Add button.

5. Select "NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport," and click "OK".

6. Select the Continue button on the next pop-up menu.

Windows XP

1. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.

2. Click Network and Internet Connections.

3. Click Network Connections.

4. Double-click Local Area Connection.

5. Click Properties.

6. Click Install.

7. Select Protocol.

8. Click Add.

9. Select NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol.

10. Click OK and then click Close.
