4.2i Install - Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 causes a crash or "STOP 50" blue screen error

Keywords: Windows, Win, 2000, 2K, service, pack, SP, 3, STOP, crash, error, 50, blue, screen, install

Urgency: Hot

General Description:
After I upgrade to Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 , my computer crashes at startup with a "STOP 50" blue screen error.

NOTE: Microsoft has released Windows 2000 SP4. Please see resolution 2 if your issue concerns this Windows Service Pack.

The file "windrvr.sys" is not compatible with Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

You can avoid the blue screen error by following these steps:

1. Immediately after the BIOS boot process, as Windows begins to load, press the "F8" key, and go into SAFE MODE.

3. Go to the "winnt\system32\drivers" directory and delete the "windrvr.sys" file.

4. Restart your computer.

Replace this driver with an upgraded version that is compatible by following these steps:

1. Download "windrvr.sys" version 5.05b (released 8/12/02):

2. Unzip this file into your "winnt\system32\drivers' directory.

3. Restart your computer.

NOTE: This updated file is also compatible with Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

After the release of Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, this issue will not be fixed with the patch in resolution 1. Windows 2000 SP4 requires "windrvr.sys" version 5.051, which was available in ISE version 5.2.03i. Because this Windows service pack was released long after ISE 4.2i was tested and released, there is no patch available for ISE 4.2i. Xilinx recommends that you upgrade to the latest version of ISE.
